I am a tech enthusiast and music lover, so speakers (and headphones) are by default my kind of sonic grail. I have owned many pairs during my lifetime, and my quest doesn't seem to stop after 30 plus years. I had read reviews of the Harman Kardon Neo online and really wanted to give it a try, although I sincerely prefer my sound in stereo rather than from a single unit, which now seems to be the standard with miniaturisation. My previous experience with the Huawei-Devialet collaboration had left me wanting for more, so I felt I would give the Neo a try, even though I was ready to be deceived because cheap speakers always let people down, once past the novelty factor. To be honest, I wasn't ready for the sound quality of the Neo. At less than MUR 3K, I didn't expect such a pure sound. It just feels and sounds great to the ears. I cannot describe music as I am no sound engineer, but I know quality when it comes along and I can say with conviction that music from this beautiful bluetooth speaker really sounds beautiful. It's no boom box but the lows are impeccable, and the highs are very friendly to the ears. The mids are out of this world. It's a one of a kind experience. That being said, this speaker seems to target audiophiles rather than metalheads and techno kids, but the Neo proudly holds it's end of the bargain for jazz, folk, and R n B lovers. At a time where the music industry is again releasing entire music catalogs in improved formats, the Neo does provide an over the top encounter for the listeners searching for a crystal clear sound. The Neo is a palm sized light speaker (250 gm) that looks like a large square pebble with softened edges, and looks like its covered in expensive mesh. According to specs, it's IPX7 waterproof (but should not be dunked in a pool), and BT version is labeled at 4.2. It's available in blue and bronze (which is the colour I went for), and the manufacturer boasts a 10 hour battery life depending on music volume and source quality. Next to the charging port, there is an auxiliary port although this may not be much of use in the wireless era. The device does handle calls via BT according to specifications. The Neo also features a strap for convenience, probably for backpackers, although I don't see the point of it. But then, I only listen to music at home. Overall, the Harman Kardon Neo is a gem of a classy speaker with absolute clear sound, which is a steal at such a friendly price.
